Is your horse protected from Bighead?
We have seen some excellent rain recently, so we urge all of our clients to rethink what your horse is eating. With fresh leafy growth in the buffel grass, we see a massive spike in the oxolate concentrations, which can lead to bighead. If your horse is not getting enough dietary calcium it will mobilize calcium from its skeleton, and you can end up looking like the horse above! (it came into RVC last year and has been on a careful supplementation program)
Lameness, bad attitude, facial swelling, inability to stand or even death are just a few common symptoms seen with bighead.
We suggest all clients whose horses who have access to buffel take a look at supplementation right now, especially in horses with growing skeletons or currently lactating (higher calcium demands)
If you would like to know more please contact us - we are very knowledgeable and have access to products that are not available at other stores in Roma!
We would appreciate it if our horse enthusiasts shared this post to their friends to help us get the word out about bighead. In the meantime take a look at the links below to find out more!
