Why you should be careful feeding cooked bones!

Beware feeding cooked bones! They tend to splinter and/or have sharp edges!

Just ask this like this little pup who came in to RVC recently. Presenting with severe respiratory difficulty, this bone lodged sideways in the throat over the opening of the airway. The bone managed to catch a sharp edge on the soft tissue and rotate sideways, creating a life threatening situation. Quick thinking meant that we were able to anaesthetise and carefully remove the bone without causing further trauma to the airway or oesophagus! It was a very close call to say the least...
